SMRT and SBS to raise fare?

Sometimes its very hard to prove naysayer wrong , especially in singapore politics where this adage always seems to be true ,”before election promise sky and earth after election pattern more then badminton”. Which once again seems true with the both SBS and SMRT applying to the transport council to raise fare.

Citing cost pressure from energy and manpower , these reason are quite amazing , considering that when i take public transport the ratio of Singapore to Foreign drivers seems to be going down. Wasn’t these foreigners here to help save cost? . Also a quick Google clearly shows that crude fuel prices have not even match the record high for 2008 , yet somehow raising transport energy cost were the reasons. Also what happen when the fuel prices drops? do i see the public transport company offering a rebate?.

If there were really so much cost pressure could any economist or accountant explain to me why every now and then i keep hearing news about these transport company achieving record profits? . If business was so bad that you have to raise prices to cope , should profit not hit record high?. Let also be fair to these PUBLIC TRANSPORT company , after all they are entities that seeks profit . But rather the wage transport council who main role is to protect the public interest. What are the rationals to justifies these price increase when the bottomline dont seems to suggest so.

Perhaps its time to highlight the decision making process within the transport council , because maybe i wasn’t a scholar i could figure out the rational of their decision or perhaps i wasn’t privy of some forecast model that justifies such action

  1. And why not apply to the PTC to raise fares if approval means more profit? If the management do not generate higher profits, the shareholders will have them replaced. You must be naive if you really believe that PTC cares for the man in the street.
